Hereville: How Mirka Got Her Sword

Hereville: How Mirka Got Her Sword
  •  year of publication: 2010
  • publication city:  New York
  • publisher:  Amulet Books
  • ISBN:  978-0-8109-8422-6
Annotation:  Spunky, strong-willed eleven-year-old Mirka Herschberg isn’t interested in knitting lessons from her stepmother, or how-to-find-a-husband advice from her sister, or you-better-not warnings from her brother. There’s only one thing she does want: to fight dragons!

Personal Thoughts:  This book was funny, expressing the universal discontent of being 11 years old, but shown here in a traditional Orthodox Jewish family, in a closed off to Gentiles society.  I really enjoyed the artwork.  Deutsch illustrations are so expressive and alive, they could easily be translated to animation and Mirka would easily make a popular protagonist of her own show.  This is essentially a retelling of  a fairytale structure where the young girl learns to become a warrior.  It's fun and fast and it begs for a sequel!
